It is believed that the mei tai originated from China and paved way to babywearing all over the world. Its early forms consist of a fabric having four straps attached, which secure the whole thing and the baby to the shoulders and hip/waist of the mother or caregiver.
Now, there are different types of mei tais, each coming from different major parts of the world and showing unique characteristics. For example, American designed mei tais are rectangular whereas those made in Europe are round. There are also those that include additional features aside from the basics like a headrest or hood for added protection.
It’s easy to use
You may have already heard of, seen, or used baby wraps. They’re basically a long piece of fabric that you wrap around you and your baby to baby able to wear them. Personally I think they’re a wonder but they can be very hard to use especially if you’re a first timer. Most of the time, you also need assistance to place your baby comfortably on your back or front.
With mei tai, you don’t have to think of these things. The straps made it easy. All you have to do is place everything where it should be and tie it securely and you’re set.
It’s a no-fuss baby carrier
Unlike baby carriers that have countless of buckles, mei tais are simple. Because they’re not bulky, they can be stored easily too. You can practically bring them anywhere.
They’re great for summer use
Mei tais are made of materials that are made for warmer days. They are extremely breathable. The overall design of this baby carry also allows proper ventilation, which a lot of other types can’t offer.
Many baby carriers have “adjustable” features, claiming they can fit all sizes. But the truth is, if the baby carry is too big for your baby, it will stay too big. If it’s small, unfortunately, your baby will not fit in there. No amount of adjusting will change it.
It’s different with mei tais because you can your baby can use it from a few months after birth to toddlerhood. And with mei tai’s durability, you won’t have to replace it all the time.
Things to consider
If you are planning to use a mei tai, take note that there are different things you need to take into account first. For one, what are you using it for? Specific purposes point toward the right type of carrier that you should get. For instance, if you’re planning for travel, it may not be the best choice, especially if you’d have to deal with different weather conditions including rain. You may want something that offers more protection to your child. Mei tais are also not ideal for hip carrying. It’s best as front-facing and backpack style carriers.
