She Was Born With Hundreds of Birthmarks All Over Her Body: She’s Going to Make You So Proud!

Have you ever heard of giant congenital melanocytic nevus? That’s a mouthful for a rare skin condition which manifests as moles and birthmarks covering up to 70% of the body! Only one out of 500K people are affected by this condition and one such person is the beautiful and friendly Ciera Swaringen from North Carolina. Here’s her story…

Isn’t she precious? You can’t help but love the look on this cheeky little girl’s face. Unfortunately, you know how cruel children can be sometimes… as a child, she was called a “spotty dog” by a boy on the bus who laughed at her and teased her. Looking back, Ciera would recall the majority of nasty commentary about her appearance came from boys.

She told the press, “Teenage boys are usually the first ones to comment when they see me. They say things like, ‘You look like you’re dirty, take a wash!’” How would you feel to hear people say things like this to your son or daughter who is absolutely beautiful in your eyes inside and out? Fortunately for Ciera’s parents, she didn’t let boys slow her down…

Growing up in a small town, Ciera sort of worked her way into the hearts of the people in her area. Richfield, NC has a population of only about 600 people and virtually everyone knows everyone. People in her town know Ciera, know her family, know her history, and they had the time to get accustomed to her unique appearance. It’s really only when Ciera leaves town, these days, that she remembers she looks so different to other people. Still, are you wondering if maybe these marks can be removed? For the sake of her quality of life?

Doctors warned Ciera she had too many marks to remove and, as she aged, she would only develop more and more birthmarks and moles. The marks are not all harmful or cancerous, but, Ciera has to take a little extra special care when going out into the sun as she remains at risk for skin cancer. Her family has found ways to help Ciera embrace her unique look…

Ciera’s father is the first to come to her defense if any unsuspecting person dares to say anything to his little girl in public. As for her mother, Ciera fondly remembers her referring to the marks as “angel kisses.” Support from her family helped her create her own sense of self and her own philosophy for self-love – you’ve got to hear what this bright young woman thinks!

Ciera told the press, “…I’m so proud to be different and, at the end of the day, we all have something about us that’s unusual, whether it’s on the inside or the outside.” How wise of this young woman to focus on commonality rather differences – she’s not giving into the baser instincts other youngsters exercised on her during childhood! She even took it a step further…

Through meet ups and research, Ciera has sought out others with her condition. in particular, she learned of celebrities who choose to live with their unseemly markings like the model and dancer Cassandra Naud who refused to remove a large birthmark on her face. Take a peak at what life looks like for Ciera these days…

Ciera is a mom! Her 16K followers witnessed the announcement of the birth of a sweet little baby girl. Ciera had a long pregnancy but gave birth to just the sort angel her own mother referenced when Ciera was this small! She keeps herself busy with becoming a mother, a family…

She just celebrated her very first Mothers’ Day last month in a floral blue dress and her little girl tucked in her arms. Aren’t the spots and marks starting to just blend away in the glow of her smile? She looks so very content, doesn’t she?

We hope Ciera’s story warms your heart! With enough love, any child can overcome any obstacle and knock your socks off! We wish Ciera and her beautiful little family the very best and may her daughter carry that same, accepting, compassionate spark her mother lit within her own troubled heart!
