Gone too far? The crazy (and sometimes unhealthy) things celebrities do to lose weight and get in shape

Numerous celebrities will admit to the pressure of maintaining seemingly trim figures. After the world saw Oprah shrink, expand, shrink, expand, and then finally say, “I’m never dieting again,” we had front row seats for what it must be like to feel constantly judged for your appearance. For various reasons, here are some of the more extreme forms of weight loss you may find among celebrities…

Lily James blamed the corset she had to wear for “Cinderella” for her quick weight loss before filming the movie. She underwent a liquid diet which, when done incorrectly, can really mess with your digestive system. According to E! Online, James’ corset was too cumbersome to take off during short snack breaks. She said, “When it was on, we would be on continuous days, so we wouldn’t stop for lunch … you’d be sort of eating on the move. In that case, I couldn’t untie the corset.” She said solid food would sometimes not digest properly and she would burp all afternoon and not feel like the fairy tale princess so much…

To prepare for his roles in “The Machinist” and “The Fighter,” Christian Bale quickly lost a frightening 63 pounds taking in only vitamins, sparse food, and exercising like a madman. Bale admitted this was extreme, but, he’s devoted to his work and, if he’s “obsessed” with the part, he will go that extra mile (too far) to manifest the character. Here’s one singer/actress you know very well who used what’s called a “Master Cleanse…”

The word “cleanse” covers a multitude of sins and Beyonce Knowles allowed herself to be drawn in while she was filming “Dream Girls.” The specific liquid diet she tried has been deemed by health professionals as risky due to the low-calorie intake. The diva dropped 20 pounds in three weeks. Next up, a Harvard grad should know better…

Natalie Portman lost 20 pounds for her role in “Black Swan.” Portman apparently ate only almonds and carrots… which, it would seem, motivated her dedication… which earned her an Oscar, but, research has shown malnutrition can cause harmful conditions like immunity suppression, bone loss, even brain defects. While we’re talking about “Black Swan…”

Mila Kunis also lost about 20 pounds to play opposite Portman for the demented ballerina nightmare tale. Which diet was worse – Portman ate veggies and nuts, Kunis smoked cigarettes and only took in 1,200 calories per day. She ended up weighing, at her lightest, 95 pounds. She told E! Online she would never recommend what she did to people who want to trim down. The next rapper went the liquid route…

Hard to imagine the 214 pound rapper, 50 Cent, dropped to 160 in nine weeks. He wanted to prepare for the role of a football player who is diagnosed with cancer in the film “Things Fall Apart.” He sustained himself on a strictly liquid diet – just looking at the difference before and after is startling. You can tell when someone just isn’t healthy. Moving on, this lady’s weight has fluctuated a little too quickly…

Renee Zellweger’s problem was somewhat unique – because she needed to gain weight to play “Bridget Jones” in a series of films, she would feel the Hollywood pressure to take the weight back off as quickly as she could through extreme exercise (she’s runner – 6 miles a day) and near starvation diet (after having binged for the role). This back and forth “yo-yo” dieting is very dangerous, according to fitness experts. You might have trouble recognizing the next guy in his slimmer form…

Matthew McConaughey dropped 50 pounds for the Oscar-nominated film “Dallas Buyers Club” in which he played an AIDS patient. McConaughey won an Oscar for his performance, but, he tried to lose the pounds at about 3.5 per week with the steady aid of a nutritionist. He eventually came down to eating only 5 ounces of fish and a cup of vegetables twice per day. The next actress signed up to play a dying prostitute… so, what’s a girl to do?

Anne Hathaway dropped her calorie intake to 500 per day to lose 25 pounds for her role as “Fantine” in “Les Miserables.” She lost the first 10 pounds with one of those “cleanses” and she lost the final 15 by eating two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste per day. Is that crazy? Well, the last actor did something similar…

Chris Hemsworth played a shipwrecked man for his role in “Heart of the Sea” and decided the way to look the part was to drop steadily from 700 calories a day to 500 over the course of 3 weeks. Crash dieting for any reason is not at all healthy – you’d think these people could ask for more time to prepare, or, is Hollywood to blame for the crazy that takes over some of these celebrities?
