My name is Erica Tucker and I am the owner of Sweet E’s Bake Shop! We’re a custom bake shop in Los Angeles. I’m going to walk you through making cake pops – an instant favorite!
This is a great recipe to do with your kid because it requires getting a bit messy, which kids love to do! Even if you’re not the best artist or baker, I’ll share a few tricks with you to make your baking experience fun, creative, and easy.
- 1 box cake mix (cook as directed on box for 13 x 9 cake)
- 1 can frosting
- 1 package baking chocolate
- wax paper
- fondant (optional)
After baking the cake, put it in a big mixing bowl and crumble it with your fingers. Then add in the frosting and get really down and dirty with your hands.
Once the frosting is mixed in, roll the mixture into quarter size balls and lay on a cookie sheet layered with wax paper. Put lollipop sticks in the cake balls and put in the freezer. Once the balls are chilled, dip them in melted baking chocolate and decorate with powdered sugar or candy pieces.
At the next kids’ birthday party you plan, make cake pops, then get some fondant (gum paste) and have them cut out their initials and place them on the pop! Kids love to see their names, especially on dessert! If you want to present your pops as a gift for someone, you can wrap them in cellophane and tie them with a satin ribbon.
Baking is a great learning tool for kids. It teaches them how to measure, follow directions, and be creative all at the same time. It’s also a fun way to bond with your child. You should also use this opportunity to teach your kids about safety when cooking. Make sure you tell them what boiling water looks like and what the oven looks like when it’s on.
